| Jodrell Bank - Pulsars |
|
When I was a Computer Operator at what was then UMRCC (University of Manchester Regional Computer Centre), we only had a few remote sites linked of which one of these was Jodrell Bank. I remember spending long periods monitoring a CDC Cyber 205 running a program called PSRFIND. That program seemed to run forever and at first I had no idea what it was for, only that it had something to do with the research being done at the University and Jodrell Bank. PSRFIND, I found out later was being used to find a very specific type of Pulsar. The Video (*) is an extract explaining Pulsar research at Jodrell Bank from the October 2007 episode of "The Sky at Night " which celebrates the 50th anniversary of Jodrell Bank. One ironic thing is: I've been past Jodrell Bank a few times but have never visited the place. (*) The video was captured off Freeview DVB-T edited with EyeTV2 and then exported using the iPhone template at 480x270. It is in MP4 format with a H264 video codec and AAC audio codec to get the maximum quality in a small size. |
