AmigaNOS is(was) the Amiga port of NOS.EXE by Phil Karn (KA9Q). It was originally ported to the Amiga by Louis Mamakos (WA3YMH), but I took over the Amiga sources when Louis got rid of his Amiga. My first taste of NOS on the Amiga was trying to get the binary to run... Along with Alban Pierce (G8NVW) we downloaded a multi-part uuencoded file, and then uudecoded it to find that it had been compresseed as a .arc archive.. When that was dearchived there was another uuencoded file in there which when uudecoded gave us a file called 'nos'... That was it, no other files... Over time we managed to get the program to work mostly by guesswork, and trying some of the commands from the PC version. Another stumbling block was that the method of attaching to a serial port was completely different to the PC. Later we managed to find another archive of the sources and had a play around getting them to compile, which was another adventure.. I didn't have a copy of the Lattice C compiler but Alban did, so we had several late nights sat around his Amiga getting the sources to compile. When SAS took over Lattice I got a copy of the compiler and did the compilations myself. Most of my original work was done with an Amiga 500, and a 20MB HD which was coupled together with an interface from the German C't magazine, Later I moved to an Amiga B2000 with a 105MB disk. (I still have the B2000, but its not been switched on for around 8 years) Below are several archives which were the latest that I ever distributed, you'll find some of these all over the Internet and at one point AmigaNOS was being used by a load of non-amateurs who were susbscribers to DEMON Internet.
Please note that the stuff in these files are getting a wee bit old now and probably won't run on later versions of AmigaDOS. I gave up on the Amiga at around the time that AmigaDOS 2.04 came out, but my Amiga 2000 was only running ARP 1.3.2. |
